Gillette Great Starts: Launch Event

Over the last few months, FBB has been working closely with Gillette to launch the #GilletteGreatStarts programme, aimed at equipping young people aged from 18-25 with the experience and qualifications to take their first steps into the sports industry.

The programme was initially launched via social media with a campaign video featuring FBB’s young leader Kelvyn Quagraine and a webpage offering more information about the application process for paid work placements in Broadcasting (with Sky Sports Soccer Saturday), Marketing (with H&K Strategies) and Sports Coaching (with Sports Coach UK). After being inundated with high quality applications, the launch event was held last Sunday and was a great success. Over 150 young people came down to Croydon Powerleague on Sunday 6th November to play in both male and female football tournaments. It was an all-day event featuring workshops in Broadcasting, Marketing and Sports Coaching run by our campaign partners, with a 5-a-side tournament taking place simultaneously throughout the day.

Rouche McQueen – a talented young footballer who captained the winning team, said ““I had a great experience! It was fun and enjoyable and a great feeling to be champions with some of my closest friends. We won 6 out of 7 games and each one was thrilling. On top of that, we got to find out interesting things from the different workshops. I’m looking forward to the next tournament so we can win that too.”

The workshops run by Sky Sports Soccer Saturday, Sports Coach UK and Hill+Knowlton Strategies informed the young people about the different employment opportunities that exist in the sports industry whilst also training them in some useful practical skills. Participants learnt about all aspects of the production that goes into creating a Soccer Saturday show for Sky Sports, to getting the best out of your team through coaching, or understanding how to develop sports marketing campaigns. The young people who attended were also invited to complete video applications (filmed by our FBB TV crew) for the #GilletteGreatStarts programme opportunities.

FBB Head of Partnerships Jasper Schlump, said “It has been a very successful campaign so far with more than 400 applications from young people between the age 18-24 who are interested in a career in coaching, broadcasting and sports marketing. The launch event was a great way to give young people the chance to learn more about the different career opportunities while playing a competitive tournament at the same time. It was a real collaborative effort and I want to thank Gillette and our partners H&K Strategies, Sports coach UK and Sky for helping us turning the launch event into a real success.”
