FBB Youth Takeover: Beyond Sport Conference

At FBB, we pride ourselves on providing young people with amazing opportunities that help them to develop into young leaders. On Thursday, Debra, Jaden and Joao from our FBB Schools programme at Chestnut Grove academy got the chance to run an FBB Youth Media takeover at the Beyond Sport conference. Beyond Sport is a global organisation that promotes, supports and celebrates the use of sport to address social issues in communities around the world. Their prestigious annual 3 day conference was held at the Here East centre at the heart of London’s Olympic Park, and FBB had even been nominated for an Education Innovation award. Debra was also invited to speak on a panel about Youth Leadership and she spoke eloquently on the need for youth leadership to be given greater importance, for example when she said: “Football needs youth leaders to develop the sport and make links between one generation and another.”

FBB were chosen as innovation partners at the event and our 3 young leaders were given exclusive licence to meet and interview key influencers from the world of sport and business at the conference. All of our participants were amazing and extremely versatile, trying their hand at everything from social media, presenting and interviewing, camera work to sound control.  Between them, they interviewed Nick Keller (CEO of Beyond Sport), Khalida Popal (former Afghanistan Women’s national team captain), Daniel Wood (CEO of the Freestyle Football Federation), Glenn Cummings (CEO of Alive and Kicking), Jolinda Hackett (Executive Director of Goals Haiti), and Tom Fletcher (Former US ambassador). FBB’s Tom Perez accompanied them for the day, and found out what Debra and Jayden had to say about their experiences:

Tom Perez: “Jayden, what was the highlight of your day?”

Jayden: “Interviewing the owner of Beyond Sport and meeting the owner of BT Sport.”

Tom Perez: “What was it like to get the opportunity to meet lots of people who have been successful in the world of sport?”

Jayden: “It’s inspiring to see who they are and to learn what they’ve had to do to become successful.”

Tom Perez: “What was it like to be behind and in front of the camera?

Jayden: “It was something that I enjoyed doing and I have wanted to do for a long time. I’m happy that FBB have helped me to do that.”

Tom Perez: “What would you say to other young people involved with FBB about what they need to do to get these kind of opportunities?”

Jayden: “Don’t give up. Even if someone else gets a chance you will always going to have a chance with FBB so don’t stop trying.”

Tom Perez: “Debra what was your experience like?”

Debra: “My day was filled with meeting new people! I interviewed a female footballer and the CEO’s of Freestyle Football Federation and Alive and Kicking. It was a nice chance to see different aspects of the football world. It made me realise you don’t have to be a footballer to be involved in football.

Tom Perez: “What was it like to meet Khalida Popal from the Afghani women’s national football team? She even gave you a shirt at the end!”

Debra: “It was nice meeting Khalida especially hearing her story – she told us what it took to get where she is now. It’s crazy the challenges she had to overcome – just to kick a ball she was getting harassed by men and being told it’s a men’s sport!”

Tom Perez: “Pretty inspiring. Lots of people were impressed with your interviews – is this something you’d like to do in the future?”

Debra: “I’d like to carry on with FBB, getting opportunities to interview people. Later on in life I want to be an inspiration like the people we met today and help young female footballers to get the confidence to play football and enjoy the sport that we love.”

Tom Perez: “You two are also great interviewees thank you very much.”

All in all it was a fantastic day and FBB’s young leaders were once again the starts of the show. Everyone gave it 100% and left the Olympic park feeling like gold medalists. Huge thanks to Beyond Sport for hosting us and giving our young leaders the platform to shine and develop their talents!

We will now be working with the young people to edit the videos, so please have patience as we work on them. Make sure you subscribe to FBB TV to catch the video interviews when we release them: youtube.com/fbeyondborders
